Did you know there’s a big market for files to make stuff with 3D printers?
Well, these founders did and made $410,148 on Kickstarter selling STL files.
Here’s their story.
Meet Trapper and Jeff – the founders of Modi Boxi.
Jeff is the “maker” of the duo – His basement is filled with every tool you can imagine: 3D printers, a CNC machine, a laser engraver, and all the stuff for a professional wood shop.
Trapper comes from the startup world – having successful launched companies in the video game and healthcare spaces.
The origins of Modi Boxi go back to when Jeff was trying to build a 3D printable dice tower as a gift for a friend.
It quickly became clear to Jeff that what he was building could be so much more than a cool dice tower… and the idea for Modi Boxi was born.
He spent almost a year of re-design and prototyping until he felt it was time to see if people wanted it.
Trapper joined the team and not soon after they joined LaunchBoom.
They started testing some ads in November and very quickly found out that there was a lot of demand for what they were building.
Flash forward to February of 2024 and Modi Boxi was ready to launch.
The first day they raised $82,158 and by the end of the campaign… $410,148.
This wouldn’t have been possible without a well-executed pre-launch marketing strategy.
Let’s dive into what that was.
Modi Boxi’s pre-launch marketing strategy
Making over $410K in 30 days is no easy task.
And hitting that milestone takes a combination of different marketing tactics, with the most important marketing tactic being the pre-launch.
More specifically, building an email list of real buyers before you launch your campaign.
The best way to do that is by using LaunchBoom’s Reservation Funnel System.
Here’s how it worked.
1. Modi Boxi drove traffic with Meta Ads
Meta ads are the first step to build a pre-launch email list. This is how Modi Boxi drove traffic. They tested many different variations of copy and imagery, but here was their best performing ad.
2. Modi Boxi collected email addresses on a landing page
The landing page is where they explained their product and collected email addresses. The landing page looked like this:
By the way, this is a screenshot from our LaunchKit software that all LaunchBoom Creators get access to.
3. Modi Boxi collected $1 reservations
This is the most important step and why we call this funnel the Reservation Funnel. Modi Boxi had this VIP offer for putting down a $1 reservation:
- A guaranteed 40% discount
- A free Tower Tumblr drink holder STL file
The most important thing to know is that people who put down the reservation were way more likely to buy (30 times on average, in fact).
Modi Boxi got funded on day one
Leading into the launch, Trapper and Jeff had 1,546 people who had put down a $1 reservation deposit. Remember, there’s no better predictor of launch success than the reservations.
And just like we thought, their launch was a success.
On the first day, they made $82,158.
By the end of the campaign, they had driven $410,148 in revenue from 6,879 new customers.
This was all possible because they followed the LaunchBoom system, because at LaunchBoom, our goal is not to launch a successful product, but to launch a successful business.
And it looks like Trapper & Jeff were pretty happy with the results:
